Red White and Blue

I downloaded this pattern last year I believe, and I cut it out and traced the allowances back in March, then it sat on my desk in a dusty pile for two months.  You know the story.
I have been trying to follow the Sew Weekly and this week the theme was "Red, White and Blue", so I got the kick up the arse I needed to finish it.  (Aside:  spell check just tried to correct the word "arse".  Really?  That's a word!  Well, in Nova Scotian it is.)

This tie-front blouse from Burdastyle 10/2010 has gotten mixed reviews.  Some people love it, some are indifferent but everyone agrees that the ties are ridiculously long and the instructions are crap.  So I ignored the instructions and just used my common sense.  I did french seams throughout because the fabric is so thin (somewhere between voile and shirting....what would you call that?) and very prone to fraying.  I also cut off about 25% of the tie length:

and now it looks better.

My man was home this afternoon, so I actually got some outdoor shots.  Imagine that.

And Lulu had to butt in.  Black wool pants are cat magnets.

  1. How cute! And wow, those ties are still pretty darn long. But cute!

As is the cat. And your back yard. :)

  2. it looks great! And I agree with Tanit-Isis, the ties are still really long even though you shortened them!

  3. Yeah, I really should have taken a before shot of the long ties, but they were down to my knees!

I interrupted my man half way through mowing the lawn to get these photos, which explains the mower coming out of my armpit in that back view shot. The kids' slide coming out of my face like a huge orange nose however..... got to watch the backgrounds a bit more ;)

  4. Oooh I love it, such a good fit and fantastic fabric. I have recently discovered French seams while taking part in the Crescent skirt sew-along...so simple but so effective!

  6. Thanks so much! I bought the fabric purely on a whim because I like the print so much, but I had no idea what I would do with it. I wish I knew more about fabric because I don't know what type of cotton it is: it was quite stiff until washed, then turned thin and supple (the way that an African wax print fabric behaves). Any clue?

  7. oh, it's so lovely...I think i saw that fabric somewhere before. perhaps at Fabricland (fabricville?) i think it was cotton voile. I love the blouse, you did a great job at altering the pattern.

  8. I'm not one for bows, but I do love this pattern. Your completley right in shortening the ties. Lovely lovely! You will be top sewer on Burda again making!

  9. @Farah: Yeah, I got it at Fabricville last year during one of their sell-offs (3m for the price of 1m). It was in with the quilting cottons, but was more of a voile / shirting fabric.
@Charlotte: oops, I forgot to post it to Burda! Thanks!
