Some housekeeping, a pledge, a purchase and plans for next week

I started reading sewing blogs 'roundabout September 2010, and I had no idea who SSS was, and why everyone seemed to know her.  I finally figured out that it stood for Self Stitched September, but I still couldn't imagine what kind of crafty person had a whole wardrobe full of things they made themselves!  Fast forward 18 months, and I think I just may play along this time.  In the very least, it will force me to wear those few things that I'm iffy about, and decide once and for all if they deserve to hang in the Overstuffed Closet of Clutter.  I would guess that about 30% of the things I own are made or altered by me, so it may not be as difficult as I imagined.

'I, Vicki of anothersewingscientist, sign up as a participant of Me-Made-May '12. I endeavour to wear one handmade or refashioned item each day for the duration of May 2012'

I may be doing some travelling to the US and South Africa, so I may cut myself some slack on those days.  Or you may get some lovely photos of me looking dishevelled in various airports.  Lucky you.

Next week's Sew Weekly is based on a childhood photo.  Not going to say much about it, but I'll leave you with this image, taken in 1978:

After having seen so many beautiful examples around, I bought the Victory Patterns Hazel dress as a pdf the other day:

Like me, you are probably thinking, "That's just a colourblocked shift dress with a tie collar.  I could make that up."  Yeah, but the cut is just-so, and it was only $10, and it was delivered instantly to my inbox, and it's a small business to support.....  Only problem is that I don't have any spare silk crepe lying around (haha).  I'm thinking about making do with two complementary poly crepes I have...we'll see how well that works.  Hopefully it won't look like a cheap wreck.

Have a good weekend everybody.

Oh, and you have to go look at Meg's blog today. Just try not laughing.  I dare ya.

  1. Good luck with all your endeavors, challenge, travel, and sewing with poly crepe! My first Self-Stitched September I rotated two pairs of pants the whole month---you can do it. :)

    1. I've already cut the crepe, and I can tell she's going to be a bitch....but at least it does have excellent drape.

  2. Oh man, I'm considering joining up (again). Not sure if I can pull it off, especially with the random field work I keep getting (not condusive to my me-made wardrobe), but would be fun to try out. Good luck with your challenge, especially with the traveling.

Also, I adore that dress pattern. :D

    1. I wouldn't want to wear anything me-made in the field, that's for sure. A least in the lab I can put a lab coat over top and protect them.

    3. UC San Fransisco, probably Mission Bay research centre. I was supposed to go in March and I thought I might be there for Mena's SW meetup, but the project was delayed. Never been to Cali before, so it'll be fun (especially to go kid-free and be able to have adult fun. not *that* kind of adult fun. you know what I mean)

I'm still waiting for those good folks over at v.organic to come by and separate my waste.....

    1. I'm not really that hot on the other patterns in the Victory line, but this one really caught my eye. And then Diane posted one last week at The Sew Weekly that was so smart, I couldn't resist making one myself!

  5. That is so great that you are signing up for Me Made My 12. Unfortunately, I have only made mostly gowns and formal attire thus far in my sewing career so unless I want to look like I'm going I a wedding everyday, I think I should stay out of this contest. But my goal is that by next year, I will have make more everyday clothing and be able to participate :)

    1. But you would seriously have the best photos of any participant. Imagine sitting at the computer in an evening gown, doing your laundry in a cocktail dress......

  6. I cannot wait to see your version of the Hazel dress - that pattern is just dreamy! And thanks for the shout out, you fabulous lady you :) *Ahem* You should stop in Chicago on your way to San Francisco. I'll even buy you a pizza and a hilarious t-shirt!! Then we'll go fabric shopping in the super shady fabric store where you have to carry the giant bolts. It would be epic - think about it ;)
